As the world witnessed another last-over finish in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2023, Mumbai Indians (MI) continued their winning spree with a third consecutive victory in Match No. 25 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Tuesday, April 18. Meanwhile, Arjun Tendulkar, who made his debut in MI's previous outing against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), finally picked his maiden wicket in the marquee tournament with the dismissal of Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
Mumbai were invited to bat first by the hosts at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, and Rohit Sharma's batters took complete advantage of the batter-friendly track and put up a mammoth 192/5 on the board. Cameron Green top scored for MI, where he started slow, but slowly accelerated his inning towards the death to take the team to a strong total.
Similar to their previous game, Arjun opened the bowling attack for the Mumbai-based franchise. He bowled two overs in the powerplay and conceded just 14 runs to restrict Hyderabad to 42/2, at the end of the powerplay. His first spell brought Hyderabad batters under immense pressure as they failed to hit big shots and also lost early wickets in an attempt to up the ante.
After that, SRH could never really make a comeback as their batters kept falling prey to MI's tight bowling at regular intervals. Keeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen did try to lift the momentum by pelting experienced Piyush Chawla for two fours and two maximums in the 14th over, however, the bowler had the last laugh as the South African was caught in the deep by Tim David.
With Markram's side still needing 20 runs to win off the last over, the MI skipper gave the ball in the hands of Arjun to defend the same with tailenders batting at the crease. The 23-year-old did not disappoint while giving away just four runs. On the fifth ball of the over, he bowled a full-length delivery to Kumar, who could only manage to play the ball directly into the hands of Rohit Sharma on the offside inside the inner circle. This meant that Arjun bagged his maiden scalp in the league, and also ended up being the most economical bowler for his side with an economy of 6.35 in his spell.
In the end, SRH fell short by 14 runs, thanks to combined efforts from all MI bowlers. Meanwhile, cricket fans and experts around the world heaped praise on the youngster and congratulated him through their social media posts.
