South African opener Ryan Rickelton was dismissed in an unfortunate manner after scoring his maiden ODI century in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The left-hander, who was in great touch against Afghanistan, fell victim to an unlucky run-out off Rashid Khan’s quick reflexes.

The Proteas took on Afghanistan in the third match of the Champions Trophy 2025 at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi on Friday. After winning the toss, South Africa elected to bat first. They lost Tony de Zorzi early but the innings was stabilised by Rickelton, who played a magnificent knock to bring up his first-ever century in an ICC event. His 103-run knock came off 101 deliveries with seven fours and a six.

Just when things were looking smooth for South Africa, Rickelton was sent back against the run of play. Facing a length ball, the southpaw came down the track and flicked it straight back to Rashid, who picked up the ball and threw it towards the stumps. Rickelton attempted to dive back into the crease. However, his bat bounced off the ground and was in the air when the bails were dislodged.

Earlier the 28-year-old completed his fifty in just 48 balls and went on to construct a solid 129-run stand with skipper Temba Bavuma (58) for the second wicket, helping South Africa take command of the innings. His century also saw him surpass AB de Villiers’ record for the highest score by a South African wicketkeeper in Champions Trophy history.

De Villiers held the record with a 70-run knock against India in Cardiff back in 2013. He also became the fifth South African to score a Champions Trophy hundred, joining the likes of Herschelle Gibbs, Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis, and Hashim Amla.
