The Australian supporters of the crowd at the Adelaide Oval jeered Mohammed Siraj immediately after he bowled centurion Travis Head on Day 2 of the ongoing Test between Australia and India. After drubbing India all around the ground during his majestic innings which comprised 17 fours and four maximums, Head uncharacteristically ended up missing a low full-toss by Siraj to have his stumps castled.

However, it was not the dismissal of the local boy which the Australian supporters had an issue with. Siraj, while on his way celebrating, seemed to be the initiator for the verbal spat between the two. Not only did he blurt out a few fiery words, he also gave him a send-off as if to gesture him to be off to the pavilion. The agitated reaction prompted Head to have his say as well, who a few moments later, walked back to a boisterous response after a truly special knock which had positioned his team in the ascendancy.

The same could not be said about Siraj, as he was continuously booed by the Australian faithful, during that over and after it too. After his over, the Indians, and in particular, Rishabh Pant, tried to calm him down as he walked off to the fine-leg fence. He was offered no reprieve on his way to the far-end of the ground. The home crowd in the backdrop were vocal enough to express their displeasure at the manner in which Siraj had conducted himself.

Interestingly, this was not the first instance of Siraj not being able to control his emotions. In the business end of the first day, he had gone to the extent of throwing the ball back towards an already-retreated Marnus Labuschagne, who had done so due to a spectator carrying a stack of beer cups while Siraj was running in to bowl.

Sunil Gavaskar labels Siraj's gesture as 'unnecessary'

On-air commentator and legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar, meanwhile, seemed to be displeased with Siraj's action towards Travis Head. Gavaskar opined that someone who has scored a daddy hundred has done nothing wrong to be deserving such a send-off from the bowler.

“Unnecessary (Siraj's reaction), if you ask me, the man's got 140, he hasn't got four or five or something. You got 140 you're giving him a send-off totally uncalled-for totally uncalled-for. No wonder he's getting the stick from the crowd. He's a local hero, Travis Head is a local hero and after scoring 100, if he had even just applauded, Siraj would have been a hero for the entire crowd, instead of giving him a send-off, he's become the villain," he said on Star Sports.

"Look, the man's got 140, like I said, if he got out for one or two, then you give him a send-off in a completely different,” the Mumbai-born added.
