Pakistan had a disappointing start to their chase in the second One-Day International (ODI) against New Zealand at Seddon Park, Hamilton on Wednesday, April 2. The team collapsed to 32/5 in 11.4 overs in their pursuit of 293. Among the early wickets to fall, former Pakistan skipper Babar Azam was dismissed for just one run, falling victim to a sharp delivery from Jacob Duffy.

The Kiwi pacer bowled a back-of-a-length delivery outside the off stump, which jagged away with extra bounce and took the edge of Babar’s bat, landing safely in Henry Nicholls hands at second slip. The Pakistan top-order batter’s dismissal came just three deliveries after Abdullah Shafique's departure, leaving Pakistan struggling at 7/2. New Zealand capitalised on the early breakthroughs, maintaining their dominance over the visitors.

Earlier, the Kiwis posted a competitive total of 292/8 in 50 overs, with Mitchell Hay playing a stunning knock of 99* off 78 balls. His innings featured seven sixes and seven fours, providing crucial momentum to New Zealand’s innings. Despite regular strikes from the Pakistan bowlers, no other Kiwi batter managed to post a significant score.

Left-arm spinner Sufiyan Muqeem was the standout performer with the ball for Pakistan, delivering an economical spell of 2/33 in 10 overs. With Pakistan’s top order in trouble, the hosts tightened their grip on the match, pushing the visitors onto the back foot early in their chase.

Faheem Ashraf (73 off 80) played a fighting knock to keep Pakistan in the game while Naseem Shah (51 off 44) tried his best to reduce the margin of defeat. Eventually, Pakistan was all out for 208. After being 114/8, it looked like the Kiwis would win the match with ease but attacking innings from Faheem and Naseem ensured that Pakistan had some respectability.

New Zealand won the match by a massive margin of 84 runs and the series as well with one match to go.
