The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 got off to a flying start in Karachi, with many moments grabbing attention. However one moment shook the spectators and the commentary panel as Glenn Phillips grabbed a sensational one-handed catch to dismiss Pakistan skipper Mohammad Rizwan. The New Zealand all-rounder displayed his fielding brilliance with a gravity-defying effort that will be remembered as one of the tournament's best moments.

The incident occurred during Pakistan’s chase of the 321-run target set by New Zealand. In the 10th over, Rizwan attempted a cut shot off a short and wide delivery from pacer Will O’Rourke. The ball looked to rush for the boundary, but Phillips, who was stationed at backward point, dived to his left and stretched out his arm to pluck the ball with one hand.

The 28-year-old is renowned as one of the most agile fielders in world cricket. His ability to take spectacular catches and save crucial runs has made him an asset for New Zealand.

Philips shone with bat earlier in game

Meanwhile, the Men in Green, chasing a 321-run target, had already lost Saud Shakeel early. Rizwan, who was expected to anchor the innings alongside Babar Azam, looked in good touch before perishing by Phillips’ brilliance. His dismissal left Pakistan struggling at 22/2.

New Zealand had earlier posted 320/5, thanks to centuries from Will Young (107 off 113) and Tom Latham (118 off 104). Phillips also played a crucial role with the bat, smashing a quickfire 61 off 39 to provide the perfect finish to the innings. Pakistan’s bowlers, especially Naseem Shah (2/63), tried to contain the Kiwis, but the late onslaught by Phillips and Latham ensured a tough total for the hosts.
