India's head coach Gautam Gambhir sent cricket enthusiasts into a frenzy when he hugged Virat Kohli after Australia won the fifth and final Test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Sunday, January 5. Pat Cummins and Co. reclaimed the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after winning the five-match series by a 3-1 margin.

During India's tour of Australia, Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket. There have been speculations about Rohit Sharma's future in the red-ball format as well after the Indian captain decided to drop himself from the playing XI for the fifth Test due to his insipid form. Kohli also struggled throughout the series as he was found wanting time and again with the bat against deliveries outside his off-stump. Kohli finished the series with 190 runs from nine innings at an average of 23.75. He scored just one century in the second innings of the first Test in Perth.

After India lost the fifth Test by six wickets and crashed out of the World Test Championship (WTC) final race, Gambhir was seen hugging Kohli while they were waiting for the post-match presentation to start. The gesture even got some fans worried, as speculations around Kohli's future have already been on the rise.

Australia win Border-Gavaskar Trophy after 10 years

India started Day 3 at 141/6, with overnight batters Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar at the crease. Pat Cummins and Scott Boland bowled exceptional spells in the first session to dismiss the tourists for just 157.

Chasing a 162-run target, the World Test Champions got off to an ideal start as Sam Konstas and Usman Khawaja added 39 runs in merely 3.5 overs thanks to India's wayward bowling with the new ball. Prasidh Krishna gave India hopes of a fightback as he dismissed Konstas, Marnus Labuschagne, and Steve Smith before the Lunch break.

In the second session, Mohammed Siraj got the better of Usman Khawaja before Travis Head and Beau Webster took Australia over the line with six wickets to spare.
