Glenn Maxwell's return to Punjab Kings turned out to be a sorry affair as the batter bagged a golden duck in Match 5 of IPL 2025 between Gujarat Titans and Punjab Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, March 25. Interestingly, Maxwell walked back after consulting the non-striker only for the ball tracking to reveal that the ball was going over the stumps.

Maxwell was the second batter to fall in the over as Gujarat Titans's left-arm spinner Sai Kishore was right in the thick of action in his second over. His twin strikes momentarily broke PBKS' momentum. Kishore got rid of Azmatullah Omarzaifor 16 (15) on the third delivery his second over as the batter was caught by Arshad Khan in the deep. The next delivery was of a much flatter trajectory. Maxwell went for the reverse-sweep first delivery, however, the Australian all-rounder missed the delivery altogether.

The trajecotry of the ball was such that it looked plumb in real time and the umpire had no hesitation raising his finger. However, had Maxwell challenged the decision, he would have survived. The blunder left Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting dejected in the dugout.

Meanwhile, Marcus Stoinis, who came in to bat after Maxwell departed. safely negotiated the hattrick delivery. Although Kishore ended up dismissing Stoinis in his final over. Interestingly, Stoinis also fell while trying to reverse-sweep. However, all he could do was guide it straight to short third man.

Punjab Kings post mammoth 243

Kishore ended with impressive figures of 3/30 in his four-over quota. However, every other bowler proved to be expensive. Other than Kishore, only Kagiso Rabada and Rashid Khan were amongst the wickets as Punjab Kings ended their innings with 243/5 at the end of 20 overs.

Skipper Shreyas Iyer played a superlative knock in his first game for the franchise as he led the way from the front with an excellent unbeaten 97 off 42 deliveries with five fours and nine sixes. He was left stranded after Shashank Singh took matters into his own hands at the other end in the final over, scoring 23 off Mohammed Siraj to remain unbeaten on 44 off 16.
