The Chepauk crowd was ecstatic on welcoming MS Dhoni back as captain after 682 days, but that quickly changed into silence as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) went all over the Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) batter in their IPL 2025 clash. KKR’s bowlers went on a wicket spree, with Sunil Narine delivering a brilliant delivery by trapping Dhoni LBW for just 1.
The legendary wicketkeeper-batter returned to captaincy duties following Ruturaj Gaikwad’s unfortunate season-ending injury. However, being asked to bat first, CSK's innings never got going, and Dhoni walked in to bat at No. 9, with his team struggling at 75/7 in the 16th over. However, just four deliveries later, Narine outfoxed him once again.
The delivery from the veteran spinner was tossed up on off, turning in slightly. Dhoni, attempting to work it on the leg side, missed the ball entirely and was hit on the pads. The on-field umpire raised the finger, with the Ranchi-born instantly reviewing, in an attempt with some bat being involved. The third umpire ruled no contact with the three reds on the ball-tracker.

Notably, across 20 T20 matches, Dhoni now averages just 14.4 against Narine, with a strike rate around 52. Moreover, Moeen Ali, Varun Chakravarthy, Vaibhav Arora, and Harshit Rana joined Narine in dismantling CSK’s lineup. The hosts were 77/8 by the end of the 16th over, after managing just 18 runs in the first five overs of the match. Vijay Shankar (29) and Rahul Tripathi (16) showed some fight, but couldn't stop the collapse. The five-time champions also brought in Deepak Hooda as an Impact Sub, hoping for some runs, but he departed for a duck. The home team finally finished their innings on 103/9 in their allotted 20 overs.
