Team India took on Sri Lanka in the first ODI of the ongoing three-game series. Both sides locked horns at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Friday, August 2. Coming in to bat first, Sri Lanka posted a total of 230 runs in the first innings, and in response, India also scored 230 runs, which resulted in the match being tied.

It is worth noting that in the long history of ODI cricket, the matches have only been tied 44 times, with India being involved in 10 of them. The 10th instance came against Sri Lanka.

The visitors got off to a flying start to the run chase as skipper Rohit Sharma scored 58 runs in 47 deliveries, alongside Shubman Gill, who amassed 16 runs to his name. Furthermore, Virat Kohli scored 24 runs, with Shreyas Iyer scoring 23.

In the middle order, KL Rahul and Axar Patel attempted to revive the innings, scoring 31 and 33 runs, respectively. All-rounder Shivam Dube smashed two sixes and a boundary to level the score with 15 balls left in hand. The seemingly guaranteed win saw Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir start to celebrate. Kohli got up from his seat, applauding Dube’s effort, before patting Gambhir’s back.

However, Dube was trapped by Asalanka on the next ball, sending him back to the pavilion with a score of 25 runs. Although hope was not lost for India, Arshdeep Singh came out as the final batter, with the Men in Blue needing one run to win the game.

As the other players were ready to rush out to the ground to celebrate the win, Arshdeep Singh decided to end the match with a boundary, and in attempting a big shot, he was dismissed LBW, and the match was tied. As the number 11 batter called for a review, Gambhir and Kohli watched on in disbelief. While Sri Lanka was celebrating the tie, team India found themselves stunned.
