Arguably the most prominent timed out dismissal in the recent past occurred in the 2023 World Cup where Angelo Matthews was the victim against Bangladesh. Another incident happened during the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) match between Khulna Tigers and Chittagong Kings on Tuesday, December 31 where the Chittagong Kings all-rounder Tom O’Connell was adjudged timed out by the umpire as he failed to reach the crease within the allocated three-minute window.
The Kings were chasing a massive target of 204 in the match, and O’Connell was set to come at the number seven position, while the Kings were at 56-5. O’Connell was given timed out by umpires Raveendra Wimalasiri and Tanvir Ahmed. However, Khulna Tigers captain and Bangladesh’s star all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz decided to call him back which was also appreciated by Kings skipper Mohammad Mithun who agreed that the dismissal was legitimate and praised Miraz for having a big heart.

“I personally feel Miraz did a fantastic job, He showed that he has a big heart. It is within the rules for the fielding side to appeal. Credit to Miraz for letting [O'Connell] return to the crease,” Mithun said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
“The batter shouldn't be late to the crease, particularly in a T20. He was a little late in getting ready. Probably he was a little relaxed when he was getting ready, maybe he didn't realise that we would lose wickets so quickly. That's what made him late. Nothing else," Mithun added.
What happened in the match?
Despite the Kings skipper calling back O’Connell the Khulna Tigers continued dominating the match altogether. The Kings were finally bowled out for 166 and lost the game by 37 runs opening up their campaign with a win while the Kings had to suffer a big loss which will affect their confidence going forward in the tournament.
The Player of the Match was Khulna Tigers wicketkeeper Mahidul Islam Ankon for his incredible unbeaten 59 from just 22 deliveries which was enough to set a huge target against the Kings and was also solid behind the stumps in the second innings.
