March 9, 2025, became a historic day for Indian cricket as the Men in Blue clinched their third ICC Champions Trophy. This triumph not only marked India’s long-awaited return to ICC glory in the 50-over format but also saw senior pacer Mohammed Shami finally win an ICC trophy.

Prior to the tournament, there had been talks about Shami’s lack of an ICC title. Nevertheless, the seasoned pacer finally put those conversations to rest, regardless of having a mixed campaign. He began the tournament in a spectacular fashion, claiming a fifer against Bangladesh but faced difficulties in the final game, giving away 74 runs with just one wicket to show. Despite this, his contribution throughout the event was pivotal to India’s success.

Shami also found himself at the center of a controversy just before the final, amidst his on-field performances. During the tournament, the fast bowler opted to consume an energy drink, a decision that did not go well with some religious leaders who outlined him for not keeping ‘Roza’ (fasting during Ramadan). The conversation over Shami’s choice formed ideas on social media, with some raising questions on his religious commitments.

Nevertheless, Shami acknowledged with a subtle yet powerful gesture during the post-match celebrations. 

As the Indian team celebrated their win on the podium, players rapidly popped bottles of champagne in joy. Nevertheless, following his religious beliefs, Shami quietly stepped aside, choosing not to take part in the champagne shower. Once the celebration concluded, he joined his teammates, earning applause and praise for his graceful act.
