Usman Khawaja did not look comfortable during his stay at the crease on Day 4 of the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground. He was put to the test by Jasprit Bumrah early on but the opener survived before Mohammed Siraj got the better of him in the 19th over of the game. The pacer bowled a full delivery and Khawaja failed to get into the line and went for a gentle push but in the meantime, the ball sneaked through and crashed the top of the off-stump.
Siraj was under immense pressure, leading to the second innings when the experts questioned his place in the playing XI. The 30-year-old failed to live up to his potential in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy and went wicketless in the first innings, conceding 122 runs in 23 overs.
However, he was more disciplined in the first session on Day 1, which helped him clinch Khawaja's wicket. After the dismissal, the Hyderabad-born hit his traditional finger on the lips celebration, while the crowd too got behind him as they were chanting ‘DSP, DSP’ from the stands.

India needed a strong start with the ball and the pacers have done a commendable job so far. Bumrah looked unplayable for the majority part of the time. He dismissed Sam Konstas for eight runs and was close to sending Marnus Labuschagne back to the pavilion. In the 18th over, the 31-year-old bowled a full delivery that went to crash at Labuschagne’s pads. Even after a strong appeal, umpire Micheal Gough shook his head in favour of the batter.

The visitors decided to review it upon a small discussion. In the DRS, it was seen that the ball pitched in line but turned out to be the umpire’s call. The Indian team was disappointed but they managed to save the review. The goal will be to bundle Australia early on Day 4 and then try to chase the total and take a 2-1 lead in the series.
