The coveted Pakistan Super League (PSL 2024) often remains stirred with controversies time and again. Now, in the latest bizarre incident, team Peshawar Zalmi (PES) were given five penalty runs after a throw darted by a Multan Sultans (MUL) fielder ended up hitting the ball to their wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan's keeping gloves. Notably, the gloves were kept on the ground during the point of contact and this bizarre incident took place on Thursday.
For the unversed, Zalmi's batter Tom Kohler-Cadmore who was facing spinner Khushdil Shah, played a stroke towards the fine leg region. At that juncture, stumper Rizwan went after the ball leaving behind his keeping gloves on the ground. Interestingly enough, by the time the keeper could have collected the ball himself, another fielder broke in and released the ball in a flash only to find Rizwan's gloves as the target.
Consequently, after the batter on the non-striker's end in the form of Babar Azam noticed where the thow had landed, demanded Aleem Dar who was officiating the match to look into this discrepancy. To everyone's surprise on the fielding side, Dar charged an extra five runs as a penalty deeming it as 'illegal fielding' by the opponent.

As per the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) rules of cricket- "A fielder will be deemed to have fielded the ball illegally if, while the ball is in play he/she willfully discards a piece of clothing, equipment or any other object which subsequently makes contact with the ball."

Similar 'illegal fielding' incident took place during T20 World Cup game
Notably, this wasn't the first time such a bizarre incident has happened during a match of cricket. Another similar instance occurred during a T20 World Cup match in the year 2022. During this incident, South Africa were penalized against their neighbours and opponent Zimbabwe. In this incident, the keeper's gloves in crime belonged to Quinton de Kock which acted as a hurdle.
