Afghanistan pulled off a historic victory against Australia in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. Both sides took on each other in the Super Eights stage of the tournament in the 48th game at the Arnos Vale Ground, Kingstown, St. Vincent, on Sunday, June 23.

As Afghanistan batted first, the side’s openers got off to a brilliant start. Rahmanullah Gurbaz started the first innings, scoring 60 runs in 49 deliveries. Gurbaz was finally dismissed by the in-form Marcus Stoinis, who had a unique celebration after taking the wicket of Gurbaz.

Stoinis seemed to be sending Gurbaz back to the dressing room as Australia took their first wicket in the 16th over of the first innings. After Gurbaz’s dismissal, the rest of Afghanistan’s batters crumbled during the latter stages of the first innings as Afghanistan were limited to a score of 148 runs.

However, as Stoinis came out to bat during the second innings, the ace all-rounder was caught behind as Gurbaz took the catch and celebrated in style. Furthermore, both players exchanged words when Stoinis was taking guard before batting as well. The clip of the same has been going viral all over social media.

Afghanistan script history as Australia concede defeat

Speaking of the game, Afghanistan managed to post a total of 148 runs in the first innings as Australia’s bowling attack put in a good performance in the latter stage of the first innings. Pat Cummins was the highest wicket-taker, with three wickets to his name. Adam Zampa struck twice, with Stoinis taking one as well.

Aiming to chase down the target, Australia’s plans immediately faltered as openers Travis Head and David Warner were dismissed quite cheaply. Mitchell Marsh was dismissed for 12 runs as well, with Glenn Maxwell being the highest run-getter, scoring 59 runs in 41 deliveries.

However, Afghanistan’s on-point bowling attack limited Australia. Gulbadin Naib was the star of the show. Taking four brilliant wickets, Naib made sure that Australia fell short. The Mitchell Marsh-led side only put up 127 on the board, as they lost the game by 21 runs.
