The second day of the first Test between India and New Zealand was a roller coaster ride for the hosts. Opting to bat first, India were bundled out for a meagre total of 46 runs after New Zealand’s bowling attack made sure to make the most of the overcast conditions.

As New Zealand came out to bat, the situation was quite different for the visitors. After skipper Tom Latham’s early wicket, Devon Conway put in an excellent performance, helping his side gain a reasonable lead on day 2. However, things went from bad to worse for team India after star wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant injured himself. The moment happened on the last ball of the 37th over of New Zealand’s first innings.

Ravindra Jadeja bowled the over, beating Devon Conway; the delivery went towards Pant, who missed the chance for a stumping. Failing to collect the ball, the delivery hit Pant’s knee and he went down on the ground after being hit. The star batter needed some attention on his right knee immediately as the physio came out. However, as many hoped that the injury was nothing serious, Dhruv Jurel was seen walking out padded up with a helmet as he replaced Pant as the wicketkeeper, with the former wobbling out of the field.

Meanwhile, in the last session, the game was halted early due to bad light. The Indian skipper Rohit Sharma revealed a concerning update regarding Rishabh Pant. He revealed that Pant suffered the injury in the same knee which was damaged during the car accident and operated. Hence, at this moment, as a precautionary measure, he will be monitored and hoped that he will be able to get back into the field in Bangalore.

"He has got a swelling on his knee. It's the same knee on which he got the surgery. We don't want to take risk. Hopefully he'll be back in this match," said Rohit after stumps on Day 1.

India’s fightback chances look slim after horrid first innings

The second day of the first Test has been a forgettable one for Team India. They opened their innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma scoring 12 and two runs, respectively. Virat Kohli and Sarfaraz Khan departed for a duck, with Rishabh Pant adding 20 runs on the board.

KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ravichandran Ashwin departed for ducks as India posted just 46 runs in the first innings. With the race for the WTC final heating up, the horrid showing in Bengaluru would have been something that the hosts were looking to avoid.
