Rohit Sharma cut a disappointed figure after Virat Kohli lost his wicket off the last ball on Day 3 of the first Test between India and New Zealand at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday, October 18.

India bowled out New Zealand for 402 after Rachin Ravindra smashed a brilliant 134 off 157 deliveries and added an incredible 137-run stand with Tim Southee (65). After conceding a humongous first innings lead of 356 runs, the hosts had to bat out of their skins to forge a comeback. Rohit Sharma scored a fluent half-century after Yashasvi Jaiswal wasted a good start.

After the two openers departed, Virat Kohli and Sarfaraz Khan put the New Zealand bowlers under pressure as they played some glorious shots and took the occasional risks to keep Tom Latham on his toes. Sarfaraz was the more extravagant of the two as he scored almost at run-a-ball and notched up his fourth half-century in just his seventh innings. Kohli's form had been scrutinised ahead of the Test match but he showed his class by playing some exquisite cover drives and decisive sweep shots.

Both of them kept the New Zealand bowlers at bay and added 136 runs in quick time. The fans at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium were starting to dream of a comeback for the ages as New Zealand's lead was being wiped out gradually. However, on the last ball of the last over of the day, Glenn Phillips got the better of Kohli as the former India captain tried to play a forward defence but got a faint edge through to wicketkeeper Tom Blundell.

The Kiwis were cock-a-whoop as they knew the importance of the wicket. Not only did it end an ominous-looking Kohli's stay at the crease, but it also ensured that the tourists would have a new batter to bowl to on Day 4. There were a lot of concerns about Kohli's form in the longest format of the game but his knock on Friday will undoubtedly give him a lot of confidence. The Delhi batter was crestfallen as he trudged back to the dressing room after scoring a 102-ball 70. He hit eight fours and a solitary six during his knock.

Rohit was left frustrated as New Zealand ended his premier batter's stay at the crease. Meanwhile, Sarfaraz remained unbeaten on 70 off 78 balls at the other end.

India trail by 125 runs

India finished Day 3 at 231/3 and are still 125 runs behind New Zealand's first-innings lead. The good sign for them is that the pitch hasn't started playing tricks as yet. Some deliveries have kept low and others have spun past the bat but they have been few and far between.

India have a lot of depth in their batting order but the first target will be to wipe out the lead completely without losing any more wickets. Chasing will not be easy in the fourth innings and with the variety in India's spin attack, New Zealand batters will have their task cut out. The first hour on Day 4 is going to be very important for both teams. Sarfaraz is the set batter at the crease and has gotten accustomed to the conditions. He will hope to register his first three-figure score on Day 4 and form partnerships with the other batters.
