Indian captain Rohit Sharma had a disappointing moment on the field during India's opening match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 against Bangladesh in Dubai. The veteran opener dropped a straightforward catch, denying Axar Patel a rare ODI hat-trick. However, what grabbed attention was his reaction to the missed opportunity, which was quite similar to his iconic celebration after India’s 2024 T20 World Cup win in June.
India's Champions Trophy 2025 campaign kicked off against Bangladesh on February 20. Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and chose to bat first. However, the decision backfired as the Indian pace duo of Mohammed Shami and Harshit Rana tore through Bangladesh’s top order.
During this collapse, Axar Patel was on the brink of picking a memorable hat-trick. The left-arm spinner had picked up two wickets in two balls when Jaker Ali edged the ball behind. Positioned at first slip, Rohit had the perfect chance to complete the feat for Axar. However, he could not grasp the ball and ended up grassing a simple chance.
The 37-year-old's reaction to the dropped catch quickly went viral as he was seen thumping the turf in frustration, before apologising to Axar with folded hands. Notably, the reaction was starkly similar to his celebration after the Men in Blue clinched the 2024 T20 World Cup against South Africa in the West Indies.

India started Champions Trophy 2025 on a high
Meanwhile, Jaker capitalised on the life he got and built a crucial 154-run partnership with Towhid Hridoy. The duo helped the Bengal Tigers recover from their early collapse, with Hridoy scoring a century (100 off 118 balls) and Jaker contributing 68 runs off 114 balls as Bangladesh managed to post 228 in 49.4 overs. Shami was India’s best bowler for the day, claiming a five-wicket haul (5/53), while debutant Rana finished with figures of 3/31.
Chasing 229, the 2013 champions got off to a strong start, with Rohit and Shubman Gill adding 69 runs for the opening wicket. Although Shanto and his men fought back with crucial breakthroughs, Gill held one end and played a brilliant knock. His unbeaten century (101* off 129 balls), along with KL Rahul’s 41*, ensured India secured a clinical six-wicket victory with 21 balls to spare.
