On Day 2 of the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, Australian debutant Sam Konstas mimicked Virat Kohli’s infamous shoulder barge during a crowd interaction at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
The incident took place on Day 1 when Kohli, during the morning session, shoulder-pushed Konstas during a change of overs. The young Australian, who was confidently hammering Indian bowlers to all parts of the ground, didn’t back down, and a heated verbal exchange ensued before the umpires intervened. Kohli’s actions drew criticism from former cricketers and the Australian media, labelling him as overly aggressive. Meanwhile, Konstas had a memorable debut performance, scoring a 60 off 65 balls.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) penalized Virat Kohli with a 20% fine on his match fees and one demerit point for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct. Despite the controversy, Konstas later downplayed the incident, stating it as high emotions on the field and calling it a part of the game.

Konstas made impressive fifty on debut for Australia
Sam Konstas’ debut knock set the tone of the game as Australia put up an impressive first-innings total of 474, led by Steve Smith’s century. On the Indian side, Virat Kohli’s innings of 36 was cut short by a mix-up with opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, which resulted in the latter’s run-out. Kohli’s dismissal of Scott Bland further added to India's woes. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar later steadied the ship for the side.
