India and Bangladesh locked horns in Match No. 2 of the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on February 20. India, riding high on confidence after a dominant 3-0 series win against England, looked for a strong start in the tournament. On the other hand, Bangladesh, struggling in ICC events, looked to remove their underdog tag. However, their batting lineup was in deep trouble early on, thanks to India’s strong bowling line-up.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and opted to bat first, a decision that soon backfired as the Indian pace attack dismantled their top order. The bowling unit, featuring Mohammed Shami, Harshit Rana, and Axar Patel, made early inroads, reducing the opposition to 35/5 within nine overs. Among the dismissals, Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s wicket grabbed attention due to a brilliant slip catch by vice-captain Shubman Gill.

In the seventh over of Bangladesh’s innings, Shami delivered a full-length outswinger which Mehidy Hasan looked to capitalize on the width, slashing it hard and attempting to drive the ball through the off-side. However, he only managed a thick outside edge, which went straight towards the slip cordon. Positioned at first slip, Gill moved to his right and plucked the ball out of thin air, completing a sharp catch just above his right shoulder. His exceptional effort left Bangladesh struggling at 26/3.

Shami’s early breakthroughs, including the dismissals of Soumya Sarkar and Miraz, have already given the Men in Blue an advantage. Young pacer Harshit Rana also contributed by removing skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto for a duck. Axar then joined the party, taking two successive wickets in his very first over. However, he missed his hat-trick as Rohit Sharma dropped a sitter in slips.
