A low full-toss which hit the off-stump on the full brought about the dismissal of Australian skipper, Steve Smith, during the first semi-final of the Champions Trophy 2025 between India and Australia at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, March 4. Smith was understandably left devasted and let out a shriek of frustration after the ball crashed into the stumps.

It was a Mohammed Shami delivery which led to Smith's departure. Despite a huge wicket in the context of the game, the right-arm quick kept his celebrations quite lowkey. The delivery in itself was not quite a wicket-taking one. Instead, it was Smith whose attempt to go over extra-cover's head which went miserably wrong. He was the fifth wicket to fall for Australia.

With that, Shami picked up Smith for the fifth time in the 50-over format. The head-to-head record between the two stands at 123 runs scored in 122 balls bowled. The matchup between Shami and Smith in ODIs could be said to have tilted towards the Indian pacer's favour.

Carey's fifty guides Australia to respectable score

Alex Carey did not lose his composure despite Smith's rush-of-blood attempt to clear the fence. He continued on his merry way despite a few wickets falling around him. The southpaw departed for a mature 61-run knock, courtesy of a direct hit from Shreyas Iyer.

Australia ended up posting 264 after 49.3 overs. Varun Chakravarthy ended up with another impressive performance under his belt, returning figures of 2/49 in his allotted quota. However, Shami was the standout bowler picking up three wickets. The winner of this contest will take on either South Africa or New Zealand in the final, scheduled to be held on Sunday, March 9.
