Australian captain Steve Smith once again demonstrated his excellence on the field with an astonishing one-handed catch to dismiss Dunith Wellalage during the first ODI against Sri Lanka at the R. Premadasa Stadium.
After successfully winning the toss, Sri Lanka’s captain, Charith Asalanka, chose to bat first. However, the decision failed as the Australian bowlers struck early, putting the hosts under high pressure. Despite a gallant effort from Asalanka, Sri Lanka lost wickets at regular intervals. Dunith Wellalage, who showed a ray of hope, became a victim of Smith’s fielding brilliance in the 26th over.
Matthew Short bowled a good-length delivery on the off-stump, and Wellalage attempted to contend. The ball took a thick outside edge and flew toward the slip cordon. Instinctively reacting to it, Smith dived to his right and clutched a stunning one-handed catch, leaving fans in complete awe. His incredible reflexes and safe hands again proved why he is considered one of the best fielders in the game of cricket. The crowd jumped in applause, acknowledging Smith’s sheer athleticism.

Smith’s spectacular dive broke a much important partnership between Asalanka and Wellalage, further denting Sri Lanka’s hopes of setting a competitive and tough total. Earlier in the match, the hosts suffered an unfortunate start, losing two key wickets within the first two overs.
As the innings advanced, Sri Lanka found themselves in deep trouble at 142/8 in the 36th over. Asalanka, still fighting at the crease alongside Eshan Malinga, remained their last hope of reclaiming a decent total. With Australia solidly in control of the game, Sri Lanka desperately needed a strong partnership to stay in the game.
Smith’s stunning effort added another focal point to his eminent fielding career and reinforced Australia’s dominance in the match.
