With Day 1 of the first Test between India and New Zealand at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium being abandoned, the match finally got underway on the second day. India came into bat first after winning the toss in overcast conditions and entered the match without the in-form Shubman Gill due to neck stiffness and pacer Akash Deep. The hosts went in with Sarfaraz Khan and spinner Kuldeep Yadav.
The day started with high hopes for the hosts, however, the optimism was short-lived as New Zealand pacer Tim Southee produced a moment of brilliance early in the innings. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma attempted to disrupt the bowlers' rhythm by stepping down the wicket.
However, Southee delivered a brilliant inswinger that exploited the gap between Rohit's bat and pad, sending the ball crashing into the top of the leg stump and giving his side the first and important breakthrough. The veteran opener walked back after adding just two runs to the scorecard.

India lose three in first hour
The Chinnaswamy crowd, initially excited at Virat Kohli's arrival at number three, was quickly silenced as India lost two more quick wickets in succession. Kohli fell victim to the Will O'Rourke after facing just eight deliveries. The short-of-length delivery caught Kohli's glove, with Glenn Phillips taking a spectacular diving catch at leg gully.
The situation worsened when Sarfaraz Khan attempted a counterattack. He miscued a drive off Matt Henry, with Devon Conway pulling off a stunning one-hander at mid-off. With three quick wickets down, India found themselves struggling at 10/3. Meanwhile, the covers were back on as rain arrived, with India at 13/3.
