Travis Head bothered Team India for the majority part of the last couple of years. He smashed a hundred each in the World Test Championship and ODI World Cup finals in 2023 and even in the ongoing series, when India was 1-0 up, the flamboyant batter smacked a century in Adelaide to bring the hosts back into the contest. In the third Test at Gabba, he once again hit a ton, putting India in further trouble.

The 31-year-old was expected to be India’s biggest threat in the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground but in reality, he registered a duck in the first innings and made one in the second innings. On Day 4 particularly, the Adelaide-born played a half-hearted shot and it went straight to Nitish Kumar Reddy, who was stationed at silly mid-off. With that, Bumrah also clinched his 200th Test wicket and became the fourth-fastest Test bowler to do so.

Meanwhile, the pacer didn’t stop there as soon after that, the 31-year-old sent Mitchell Marsh packing. The all-rounder was under tremendous pressure leading to the Melbourne Test as he failed to get going with the bat. Bumrah, who looked unplayable for the majority part of Day 4, sent him back to the pavilion for a four-ball duck after he nicked one to Rishabh Pant in the 34th over of the game.

The party didn’t stop there for Team India. Bumrah, who was on a roll, dismissed Alex Carey as well. The keeper-batter survived seven deliveries before the India international cleaned him up with a peach. He bowled a good length delivery that breached Carey’s defence and went on to smash the stumps as he departed for two. With that, Australia were reduced to 91/6 in the second innings.

The credit for Bumrah’s back-to-back wickets also goes to captain Rohit Sharma. He brought back the pacer at the right time and the field placement that was set for Head was perfect, which also triggered two more wickets.
