Star Australia batter Steve Smith, who looked phenomenal with the bat in the fourth Test against India at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, got out bizarrely. The 35-year-old danced down the track, attempting to play a cover drive but an inside edge got the ball hit leg and went on to roll into the stumps. The ball barely had any force but it was enough to dislodge one of the bells and with that, Smith’s incredible knock of 140 runs came to an end.
Akash Deep picked up the prized wicket of Smith, who troubled India throughout Day 2. The visitors looked clueless against him as he stitched a crucial 112-run partnership with captain Pat Cummins, who made 49 runs. The Rohit Sharma-led side didn’t plan well to tackle the wrath of Smith, who looked flawless and wasn’t shy to smack a few boundaries and sixes early on Day 2.

Notably, it was Smith’s 11th Test century against India. He made history by registering the most number of centuries in the history of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Meanwhile, courtesy of his century, Australia posted a hefty total on the board in the first innings as the series is currently poised at 1-1 and a spot in the WTC final is up for grabs.
It’s been good, nice partnership with Cummins: Steve Smith
During the lunch break, Smith opened up about his knock and noted the contribution made by the top-order batters to help him settle down early. He also acknowledged the partnership with Cummins and added that the team was in a nice spot at Lunch on Day 2.
“It’s been good. I had to work hard early yesterday, off the back of some really good work by some of the guys. Kind of got into my work quickly actually - probably not quite right. It was nice fun. It was a nice partnership with Cummo (Cummins). He played with really nice intent. Unfortunately, missed out on his fifty but yeah, we are in a really nice spot,” Smith told 7 Cricket.
