India's modern-day batting legend, Virat Kohli, has put an end to speculation about his retirement, confirming that he looks to play until the 2027 ODI World Cup. While Kohli announced his retirement from T20Is after India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, he continues to be an important member in both Test and ODI cricket.

Having won the 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy as a young player, and the 2024 T20 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy as a senior member, the veteran batter has opened up about his next milestone plan.

Speaking at a recent event, he responded to a question about his next big goal, saying, “I don’t know, maybe try to win the next World Cup in 2027.”

The 36-year-old, who has given fitness utmost importance in the past decade, has gone on to become one of the fittest cricketers in the world. With age catching up, there were concerns about his longevity, however, he has put all questions to rest.

“At 36, a week off is very good. It takes a lot out of me to put in that much effort. At this point of time in my life, I feel pretty happy. I still love playing the game. Don't get nervous. I'm not making any announcements. As of now, everything is fine,” Kohli said at the RCB Innovation Lab Indian Sports Summit recently.

While his performances in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy were underwhelming, as he scored just 190 runs in five Test matches, including a ton in Perth. The former Indian captain admitted to facing challenges but mentioned about his process of overcoming setbacks.

"For me it's just about the acceptance of, ‘Okay fine. This is what happened. I'm going to be honest with myself. Where do I want to go? What is my energy levels like?’ I'm not sitting here in 48 hours or 72 hours to make a decision. Let me go, spend time with family. Let everything calm down, and see how I feel in a few days. Within five days, I was excited to go to the gym. I was like, okay fine. It's all good," he added.

By the time the 2027 World Cup arrives, Kohli will be 38. However, with his fitness and hunger for success, he will be in India’s plans. The Indian team, under new head coach Gautam Gambhir, has not ruled out the possibility of Kohli and Rohit Sharma featuring in the tournament. While Rohit will be 39 and may find it tougher to sustain his form, Kohli’s workload, following his T20I retirement, could help him extend his career effectively.
