Australian fans were extremely unhappy with how Virat Kohli fared on Day 1 of the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground. The star batter had a shoulder bump with debutant Sam Konstas and following which, Kohli was booed heavily. The matter escalated when the media, who almost worshipped him when the 36-year-old arrived in Australia in November, called him a clown and questioned his professional ethics.

On Day 2 of the Test, the home fans joined the bandwagon as they not only booed Kohli but also chanted ‘you are a wan*er’ on his face when the cricketer was sent to the fence to field. Interestingly, Kohli enjoyed that and encouraged the fans to be louder and gestured as if he couldn’t hear what they were saying. It motivated the Australian fans but Kohli didn’t retaliate like he did in 2012 when he wasn’t shy to flick the middle finger.

Kohli’s association with Australia has always been a love-and-hate affair. The media welcomed him with open arms ahead of the series but they didn’t how he behaved against Konstas and made Kohli an overnight villain. Previously, such gestures were used to push the former India cricketer to produce better performances on the pitch and now, it needs to be seen if it affects his form with the bat.

The Indian bowlers in the meantime had a very rough time in the middle on Day 2. They were expected to push Australia to their limits but the visitors barely challenged. Mohammed Siraj was handed the ball to start the day and he was used only one over before getting removed. However, even when he returned, the pacer looked average and so did Akash Deep as Steve Smith and Pat Cummins registered a 112-run partnership.

India’s lacklustre approach also helped Smith to register his 34th Test century at the MCG. He smashed back-to-back tons against India and his ton put the visitors in further trouble.
