Adelaide Oval, a venue that has seen Indian batter Virat Kohli excel across formats, witnessed a surprising struggle from the former Indian captain during the second Test against Australia in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series. Kohli failed to make an impact in both innings. Adelaide Oval holds a special place in Kohli's career, having witnessed some of his finest Test performances, including multiple centuries.

Heading into the match, expectations were high for Kohli to anchor India’s innings, especially under the lights in the pink-ball Test. In the first innings, the right-hander walked in early after KL Rahul's dismissal, before being dismissed by Mitchell Starc, edging to slip for just seven runs off eight balls.

The second innings saw a similar pattern. Coming in at no.4 when India's score stood at 42/2, Kohli faced continuous pressure from the pace duo of Scott Boland and Pat Cummins. He survived a few close calls, however, Boland’s lines outside off-stump ultimately forced Kohli into nicking one to the wicketkeeper for 11 runs off 21 balls.

The hosts had already built a strong position in the game, courtesy of a 140-run knock by Head. His innings, laced with 17 boundaries and four sixes, pushed the hosts to a formidable first-innings total of 337. Contributions from Marnus Labuschagne (64) and partnerships down the order left India having a deficit of 157 runs.

India's bowlers, led by Jasprit Bumrah (4/61) and Mohammed Siraj (4/98), fought hard to finish Australia's innings. Trailing by 157 runs, India’s second innings faced early hiccups. KL Rahul and Kohli's dismissals added to the visitors’ woes as they ended Day 2 at 128/5, still 29 runs behind. With Rishabh Pant and Nitish Kumar Reddy at the crease, India’s hope now is on a lower-order fightback.
