In the opening ODI at the Pallekele International Stadium, spin wizard Wanindu Hasaranga gave Sri Lanka early breakthroughs against the West Indies. The tourists won the toss and elected to bat first. However, the hosts were without star opener Pathum Nissanka due to an injury, with Nishan Madushka making his ODI debut.
Windies openers, Brandon King and Alick Athanaze started cautiously and put 41 runs on the board before Sri Lankan captain Charith Asalanka introduced Hasaranga into the attack.
In his very first over, he claimed the crucial wicket of King as the opener attempted a slog sweep against a well-flighted googly. The ball, pitched around off and middle stump turned sharply, and went through the gap between bat and pad, castling the stumps. After picking the wicket, the spinner jumped with a passionate pump. King's departure for 14 off 25 balls left the scoreboard reading 34/1.

Wanindu Hasaranga got rid of both Windies openers
In his very next over, he struck again, this time outfoxing Alick Athanaze. The left-handed batter, having scored 10 off 20 deliveries, charged down the track but was deceived by the flight and dip. Hasaranga's googly turned past the outside edge, allowing wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis to complete an easy stumping. This double blow saw the visitor's scoreboard reading 41/2.
Meanwhile, at the time of writing, the Caribbean side is batting at 133/4 after 32 overs. Sherfane Rutherford and Roston Chase are currently on the crease and are looking to give the opposition a challenging target.
