On the third session of Day 1 of the fifth Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney, Washington Sundar had to walk back after a contentious DRS decision.

The final Test between India and Australia got off to a disappointing start for the visitors, who elected to bat on a green-top wicket. By the time Sundar came to the crease, India were struggling at 120/6. The southpaw walked into bat on what was a hattrick ball for Scott Boland.

Meanwhile, Sundar attempted a pull against Pat Cummins's short delivery in the 66th over but failed to connect. Though it seemed to many that the batter had missed it, Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey immediately appealed for a catch as he felt that the ball brushed his glove on its way. The on-field umpire stood unmoved before Australia opted to challenge the decision.

The DRS brought the focus to the Snickometer, which showed a faint spike as the ball passed Sundar's gloves. However, there were murmurs and noise on the Snicko throughout, making it difficult to determine if the spike was due to the ball coming in contact with the gloves. Despite the absence of any visual deflection or conclusive evidence establishing the contact of the ball with either bat or glove, the third umpire overturned the on-field decision.

The dismissal left Sundar visibly unhappy. The crowd at the stadium, too, expressed their displeasure with loud boos. Sundar's dismissal left India at 148/8, with the team's last recognised batter gone.

From KL Rahul's wicket in Perth to Yashasvi Jaiswal's dismissal in Melbourne and even Steven Smith's confident appeal in the slips in Sydney against Virat Kohli, the DRS decisions have led to uproar throughout the series.

India's top-scorer in this match has been Rishabh Pant so far with a score of 40. The left-hander looked in solid touch to hammer a big knock but attempted for a pull shot on a short delivery off Scott Boland's bowling got the toe of the bat, leading to a simple catch for skipper Pat Cummins at mid-on.
