Stuart Broad’s ‘switching the bell’ has become a tradition in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Mohammed Siraj and Mitchell Starc did it in the past and the latter once again repeated on Day 5 of the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground. The express pacer dismissed Virat Kohli right before Lunch to give Australia an edge but after the beak, youngsters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant looked in good touch.
To break the partnership with the hope of a wicket, Starc was seen switching the bails during his spell. Interestingly, Jaiswal, who saw Starc playing mind games, switched the bails once again as both Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc were spotted smiling. Later, Starc also had a brief conversation with Jaiswal regarding the switching of the bails.

Meanwhile, chasing 340 runs, the visitors were on the back foot after the first session. Having done the unthinkable at Gabba in 2021, it was expected that India to go after the total but the team had a very slow start to their innings. On top of that, they lost back-to-back wickets of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul as Pat Cummins was on song. Kohli’s wicket added more pressure on India, who looked vulnerable.

"I believe in myself, that's why I am here. I don't believe in superstitions," Jaiswal said.
"What made you change back if not superstations," Starc replied.
"I am just enjoying this moment in life," Jaiswal responded.

They managed to have a positive start to the second session, which is extremely vital as India would avoid losing the game. The question of winning the match shouldn’t tamper Pant and Jaiswal’s concentration but if the two players manage to play till the end of the day, the visitors can get the job done.
The hosts meanwhile need to break the partnership to give them a better chance of winning. The pacers have already started to feel tired and so, Nathan Lyon will be key for the remainder of the day. His battle against Pant is likely to be the highlight of Day 5.
