Youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal departed without opening his tally in the first Test against Australia at Optus Stadium in Perth. In the absence of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, Jaiswal had the responsibility of giving India a good start in the park, but the 22-year-old struggled before Mitchell Starc got the better of him in the third over of the game.

He did reasonably well in the first over, in which, five runs were scored in byes. However, in the first ball of the third over, Starc pitched outside the stumps for Jaiswal to drive, and he attempted to do so, resulting in a thick edge. The ball swung away gently and had a decent bounce, and that resulted in Jaiswal not timing it properly. He could have let it go, but the edge carried to the gully, where debutant Nathan McSweeney was present, and he picked up a simple catch.

Even though Jaiswal is the second-leading run-scorer in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle, his form is slightly concerning. The cricketer failed to make an impact in his last away tour to South Africa, where the pacers bothered him. In Australia for the ongoing series, the same problem can occur again, and his form in the longest format is slightly concerning as well.

Devdutt Padikkal departs for 23-ball duck

Soon after Jaiswal, Devdutt Padikkal made his way back to the pavilion as well. He replaced Shubman Gill in the playing XI, who is currently out with a hand fracture. Padikkal wasn’t initially named in the 18-member squad, but BCCI officials decided to add him on the penultimate day before the first Test.

Padikkal took time to settle down, but he couldn’t make a mark. He departed without opening his tally after playing 23 balls. He looked determined early on, but eventually edged Josh Hazlewood’s delivery for a simple catch for Alex Carey. With that, India lost their second wicket and were reduced to 14/2.
