Star India top-order batters, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal departed cheaply in their respective ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024-25 encounters.

Playing against Karnataka at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Shubman Gill's Punjab batted first, and captain Shubman Gill departed for just four runs of the eight deliveries he faced. Coincidentally, Gill's India teammate Jaiswal also fell for the exact same score in Mumbai's game versus Jammu & Kashmir and fell prey to Auqib Nabi in only the third over of the Day 1.

Jaiswal was trapped in front of his pads by Nabi, and it was the start of their collapse for the defending champions, as stars like Rohit Sharma, Shreyas Iyer, Ajinkya Rahane, and Shivam Dube also fell for cheap scores. Nabi wreaked havoc against the Mumbai batters taking four out of the first six wickets, keeping J&K well in truly on the front foot in the very opening session of the play.

Coming back to the Punjab batter, pacer Abhilash Shetty got the better of Shubman Gill on the second ball of the fourth over. This wicket started the derailment of their batting line-up, as the side was bundled out for just 55 in 29 overs.

The form of dismissals for quality India players is probably going to hand the duo a reality check to understand the importance of featuring in First-Class games and grinding it out in the domestic circuit. This also becomes important to have some match practice ahead of the England ODI series as well as the all-important Champions Trophy 2025, starting in February.

While Jaiswal is assumed as the backup opener in the Men in Blue's squad for the upcoming assignments, Gill has been named as the vice-captain, and both will look to score better in the second innings of their ongoing clashes, respectively.
