India’s ace all-rounder Deepti Sharma has been the most talked about cricketer for the past two days. Upon her return to India after defeating England in their backyard by 3-0 in the ODI series, she finally opened up about English cricketer Charlotte Dean’s wicket from the final ODI at Lord’s and said that the team had planned about running her out on the non-striker’s end.
During the final few overs of England’s chase, India needed just one wicket to win the game and complete a 3-0 series whitewash. But England’s tailenders kept the game going, and preserved their wicket by taking runs at a slow rate and getting close to finishing the chase. As the game became intense, Sharma smartly run Dean out when the latter started walking before the former bowled the delivery.
It was a part of our plans: Sharma
Deepti Sharma returned to her hometown- Bengal on Monday, September 26, after concluding the England tour, where the reporters asked her about the run-out incident. Speaking of the wicket, she said:
“It was a part of our plans. We had warned about it earlier as well, but she kept leaving the crease before the delivery. We followed the rules and the guidelines, that’s it. Every team wants to win, and we wanted to give a proper farewell to Jhulan Goswami by ending the series on a winning note. As a team, we put in all the effort that we could. We had also informed the umpires that she had been leaving the crease early, but still, she kept repeating it and we could not do anything about that.”
Deepti, with her presence of mind on the field, stopped midway, dismantled the bails on the nonstriker’s end, and dismissed Dean, thereby putting curtains on England’s chase. Dean was way outside the crease and had zero possibilities of coming back, which helped India get her wicket. By the time she turned back to return to the crease, it had been too late.
