Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) announced the appointment of Andy Flower as their new head coach on Friday, August 04. The franchise will also appoint a new director of cricket operations replacing Mike Hesson over the next couple of months as his contract came to an end. Hesson was a part of RCB since 2019 and during his tenure, the team managed to reach the playoffs for three consecutive seasons in 2020, 2021 and 2022.
However, the Faf du Plessis-led side failed to reach the playoffs in the 2023 season following a loss against Gujarat Titans in their final league fixture. Hesson penned down a heartfelt note on his departure and stated that not winning the IPL trophy would be his biggest regret.
Hesson took to Instagram and wrote, “Although we were able to make good progress making 3 playoffs in the last 4 seasons we were not able to win the elusive trophy 🏆 that I like so many players, support staff and the amazing fans so dearly wanted. Although disappointed to be leaving RCB I have some very fond memories working with great people both on and off the park.”
Notably, Hesson was also a part of the team management for RCB in the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League. However, the team didn’t have a great outing in the tournament as they finished on the fourth spot (second last) with just two wins from eight matches.
RCB finished as runner-ups thrice in IPL
However, according to a report in ESPNCricinfo, the management of the women's team is "not likely" to come under the purview of the new director of cricket and a new head coach will be appointed separately for the team.
RCB has been a part of IPL since the tournament’s inception in 2008. However, the team has failed to win the coveted trophy so far. They’ve made it to the finals thrice in the 16 seasons so far in 2009, 2011 and 2016 respectively.
Despite not having a trophy in their cabinet, RCB enjoys a massive fan following all over the country who’re patiently waiting to see Virat Kohli lift the elusive cup.
