After losing the World Test Championship final against Australia, India were under tremendous pressure of doing well in order to lift the trophy at the end of the new cycle. Even though West Indies were not seen as a massive roadblock, winning away from home is never an easy task, especially when the same team defeated England 1-0 in the last cycle of the competition. However, as many predicted, Indian cricketers had no problems whatsoever picking up an easy win in Dominica.

Batting first, the home team struggled to play spin, and spin wizard Ravichandran Ashwin absolutely bamboozled them in the first innings. The Chennai-born cricketer picked up his 33rd five-for while Ravindra Jadeja picked up three wickets to restrict West Indies to 150 runs. Alick Athanaze was the only batter who showed determination and courage but the 24-year-old couldn’t last long and got out on 47.

In the second innings, skipper Rohit Sharma and debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal proved their class as the Windies bowlers looked clueless in the middle. Notably, the 36-year-old hit his 10th century in the longest format of the game while Jaiswal joined an elite panel of cricketers who hit a century on his debut match. He was very close to reaching 200 as well but unfortunately, Alzarri Joseph got the better of him, when the southpaw was batting on 171.

On the other hand, Virat Kohli too looked very determined but the veteran batter once again missed out on an opportunity to score a century. He was looking in good form and thus, it was expected from him to finally touch the three-figure mark but the wait continued for him and his fans. Nevertheless, India declared their innings on 421 runs, after taking a lead of 271 runs.

Notably, West Indies’ second innings with the bat was a carbon copy of their first. None of the batters looked comfortable playing Ravichandran Ashwin as the veteran spinner picked up seven wickets, completing his 34th five-for. Jadeja, meanwhile, picked up two wickets as the Kraigg Brathwaite-led side bundled out for 130 runs. With that, India won the match by an innings and 141 runs.
