The second ODI between West Indies and India ended in the hosts’ favor, as they outclassed the Men in Blue to level the series 1-1. Team India’s gamble of not playing regular skipper Rohit Sharma and senior batter Virat Kohli backfired, as the Men in Maroon dominated across departments to win the game by six wickets.

With Rohit Sharma on the sidelines, Hardik Pandya took the captaincy mantle for the second game at Barbados. Windies skipper Shai Hope won the toss and put the visitors to bat first. Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill provided their side a perfect start, as they put up a 90-run stand in the 17th over before the latter was dismissed.

Ishan hit his second consecutive half-century before following Gill back to the pavilion. After the openers’ wickets, things fell apart for India. The middle-order batters failed to create an impact. Sanju Samson, who batted at No. 3 was dismissed for a 19-ball nine, Axar Patel, who made his way into the XI, walked back on 1(8), while stand-in skipper Pandya scored a 14-ball seven.

Some contributions from Suryakumar Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja helped India cross the 150-run mark on the scoreboard, but that was just not enough. Three-wicket hauls from Gudakesh Motie and Romario Shepherd, followed by contributions from Alzarri Joseph, Yannic Cariah, and Jayden Seales led to India being dished out for 181 runs in 40.5 overs.

Coming in to chase the target, West Indies openers Brandon King and Kyle Mayers got their side off to a great start. It was Shardul Thakur who got the breakthrough, as he dismissed the openers in the ninth over. Shardul kept the momentum going as he picked up Alick Athanaze next in the 13th over to keep India’s hopes of staging a comeback alive.

But what followed next was complete dominance by the hosts. Skipper Shai Hope was phenomenal with the bat, as he scored 63* runs off 80 deliveries, and Keacy Carty’s unbeaten 65-ball 48 helped West Indies clinch the game with six wickets to spare. The hosts chased down the 182-run target in 36.4 overs, and levelled the series 1-1.
