'Why the hell are you trending me?' - Ravi Ashwin lauds Deepti Sharma for running out non-striker's end at Lord's
Ashwin had controversially ran out Jos Buttler at the non-striker's end during the 2019 season of IPL.
Deepti Sharma is currently trending on social media courtesy of the kind of dismissal she affected to end the thrilling Lord's ODI between India and England. She ran out Charlie Dean at the non-striker's end for backing up too far when she was in her delivery stride. The run-out, controversial and 'against the spirit' of the game for many, has been cleared by ICC already stating that it is well within the rules of the game and should be called 'run-out' and not mankading.
Meanwhile, along with Deepti, India off-spinner Ravi Ashwin also started trending on Twitter and it didn't take long for the latter to address the incident. For the unversed, it was Ashwin who had started the debate about batters backing up too far back during the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
He had ran out England's Jos Buttler, who was playing for Rajasthan Royals, for backing up too far. Ashwin was then the skipper of the Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab). Coming back to Ashwin's tweet over Deepti Sharma's antics at Lord's, he lauded the Indian all-rounder and called her a 'bowling hero'.
"Why the hell are you trending Ashwin? Tonight is about another bowling hero @Deepti_Sharma06" Ashwin's tweet read.
India whitewash England in three-match ODI series
Amidst all this, India's terrific win over England in the three-match ODI series was overshadowed. The Women in Blue whitewashed the home side and gave a befitting farewell to legendary cricketer Jhulan Goswami. She also played her role in the win picking up two wickets in her spell. Renuka Singh was the star for India picking up four wickets while coneding only 29 runs in 10 overs.
Deepti Sharma was also the star with the bat scoring an unbeaten 68 runs while Smriti Mandhana also smashed a half-century helping India to reach a fighting total of 169 which they defended successfully in the end.
