Gujarat Giants pulled off their second win of the tournament with an 11-run triumph over in-form Delhi Capitals in the 14th match of the Women's Premier League 2023 on Thursday, March 16. Laura Wolvaardt and Ashleigh Gardner registered crucial fifties to help the Giants score a challenging total while batting first. Then Kim Garth and Gardner shone with the ball to bowl out the Capitals for just 136 runs.
Meg Lanning won the toss for the Capitals and elected to field first at Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium. The veteran Indian spinner Poonam Yadav replaced USA pacer Tara Norris while Wolvaardt and Ashwani Kumari came in the place of Sabbhineni Meghna and Annabel Sutherland for the Giants.
Marizanne Kapp dismissed Sophia Dunkley in the first over to give the Capitals a good start. But returning Wolvaardt and in-form Harleen Deol pulled off a 49-run stand for the second wicket to keep the scorecard moving.
Jess Jonassen dismissed Deol in the 10th over to give the Capitals a big breakthrough. Deol scored 31 off 33 but Wolvaardt pulled off another fifty, her fifth in the last six T20 innings. The South African star top-scored with 57 off 45 before getting bowled by Arundhati Reddy.
Gardner returned to form by smashing an unbeaten 51 off just 33 with nine fours to guide the Giants to a fighting total of 147/4. Jonassen took two wickets for 38 while Reddy and Marizanne Kapp bagged one wicket each for the Capitals.
During the chase, in-form Lanning and Shafali Verma struggled to build a partnership for the Capitals, with the latter getting bowled out on just eight runs on Tanuja Kanwar’s delivery in the second over. Lanning scored 18 off 15 and seemed in position for another big knock but was dismissed by the Giants' stand-in captain Sneh Rana in the sixth over.
English youngster Alice Capsey smashed 22 off 11 but was run out in the sixth over off Dunkley’s throw. Kapp then took it upon herself and top-scored with 36 off 29 but was unfortunate to get run out in the 14th over.
Kanwar took her second wicket of the game in the form of Radha Yadav while after an impressive spell with the ball, Arundhati shone with the bat by scoring 25 off 17 with the help of four fours. She dragged the Capitals closer to the target but Kim Garth dismissed her in the 18th over and Gardner finished the game with Poonam Yadav's wicket in the 19th over.
