The inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023, finally came to an end as Mumbai Indians clinched the coveted WPL title in fantastic fashion. Harmanpreet Kaur's MI dominated the tournament right from the start, going on a sensational unbeaten run.
After Meg Lanning’s Delhi Capitals finished on top in the WPL standings, they made their way into the summit clash of the tournament after MI missed it by the barest of margins, who had to take on UP Warriorz in the elimination round of the competition
In the summit clash of the competition, Delhi Capitals won the toss and elected to bat first, and the Meg Lanning-led side were through and through dominated by the in-form MI. Skipper Lanning was the top run-getter for DC with 35 runs to her name.
After a subpar performance with the bat, Delhi Capitals only managed to post 131 runs on the board for Mumbai to chase. At one stage, the Capitals were in a dismal position with 79/9, but Shikha Pandey and Radha Yadav produced sensational cameos to stitch a 52-run stand for the last wicket to guide the side to a competitive total. Issy Wong was sensational for Mumbai in the first innings, as the 20-year-old, took three wickets to put a dent in DC’s plans.
As Mumbai came in to bat, they too were greeted with early wickets as Hayley Matthews and Yastika Bhatia were both dismissed early for 13 and four runs, respectively. However, it was the fabulous knocks by the all-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur that led MI to the inaugural WPL title.
Nat Sciver scored an unbeaten 60 runs in 55 deliveries, whereas Harmanpreet added another 37 runs to the board. Radha Yadav and Jess Jonassen were the only two bowlers who managed to take wickets, as both bowlers took one wicket each.
After dominating most of the competition, Mumbai Indians have finally come through and won the first-ever Women’s Premier League title, winning the final against Delhi Capitals by seven wickets. Meanwhile, the MI domination triggered a meme fest among the fans.
