The first-ever Women’s Premier League is all set to get underway on March 4, 2023, and five teams will compete to get their hands on the prestigious silverware. While every franchise had a successful auction on February 13, as they formed a strong team for the inaugural competition, the teams also have a strong set of coaching units.

On February 15, Wednesday, the Royal Challengers Bangalore named Indian Tennis sensation Sania Mirza as their mentor for the WPL 2023. Sania has been a role model for women in sports, and has aspired many young girls to indulge in sports and sporting activities. A six-time Grand Slam title winner who recently retired from the sport, Sania Mirza is the recipient of the prestigious Padma Bhushan, Khel Ratna Award, the Arjuna Award, and the Padma Shri.

RCB made the announcement of the same on their official social media accounts on Wednesday morning. On being appointed as the women’s team’s mentor, she said:

“I was a little surprised, but I am really excited because I think that, you know I have been a professional athlete for 20 years which is very depressing sometimes when I think of it because it’s so long. But I feel like my next job, once I retire, is to try and help young women, young girls, believe that you know sport can be one of the first career choices for them.”

“And for me, the kind of things I went through 30 years ago when I picked up a Tennis racquet to play the sport which was kind of unheard of at that time, I just want to help the next generation in believing in themselves that no matter how many odds are against you, you can achieve your goal if you back yourself,” she added.

RCB had a great outing at the WPL 2023 auction as they added some big players to their side. Indian vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, senior Australian all-rounder Ellyse Perry, Australia’s pace sensation Megan Schutt, England and South African skippers Heather Knight and Dane van Niekerk, Indian wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh, and India’s up and coming pacer Renuka Singh Thakur are all part of RCB’s squad.
