India and Australia kicked off the much-awaited World Test Championship 2023 Finale in style when they locked horns at The Oval in London on June 7, Wednesday. The proceedings began with India winning the toss and electing to bowl first. Given the pitch's conditions, the Rohit Sharma-led side saw Ravichandran Ashwin sitting out, and the team going ahead with four seam options.
India got off to a terrific start to the summit clash. Mohammed Shami bowled a maiden over to start the proceedings, and Mohammed Siraj followed it up similarly, giving away no runs in his first over. Siraj got the crucial breakthrough when he returned for his second over, as he sent the Australian opener Usman Khawaja packing for a ten-ball duck.
Australian batters then managed to stabilize the innings, as David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne stitched up a 69-run stand for the second wicket. Their partnership saw India reviewing two of the umpire's decisions as both teams put up a solid fight. In the 18th over, Labuschagne hit Shardul Thakur for a four off the third delivery, but Thakur came very close to dismissing the batter off his very next.
Though India lost the review, what grabbed everyone's attention was skipper Rohit Sharma's way of indicating the DRS sign. Rohit made a unique gesture while indicating the 'T' signal as he called for the DRS without facing the on-field umpire. A video of the same went viral soon, as Rohit did the DRS signal behind his back, without even facing the umpire.
India and Australia eye towards historic feat
Notably, Rohit is playing his 50th Test for the Indian side, and luckily, leading the team in a landmark game to make the event even more special. Whichever team wins the WTC 2023 Final, it is going to be a historic moment as either India or Australia will become the first team ever to clinch all three ICC Titles. Both teams have previously won the ODI and T20I World Cups, and adding the Test mace to their cabinet would complete the circle.
