Rohit Sharma will become the fifth Indian to lead team India in a summit clash of an ICC event when he walks in for the toss at The Oval in the World Test Championship final on Wednesday, June 7. Notably, former India captain MS Dhoni has led the national team in most ICC finals, as he has won three out of four finals played under his leadership.

Kapil Dev was the first India captain to lead team India into an ICC final when he clinched the coveted ODI World Cup title against the West Indies in 1983. Flamboyant right-hander Virat Kohli shouldered the responsibility of leading the side on two occasions - the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy final and the ICC World Test Championship final (2019-21 cycle).

Ahead of the eagerly-anticipated WTC final (2021-23 cycle) against Australia, skipper Rohit Sharma will become the fifth Indian to lead the national team in a final of an ICC event.

India gears up to end decade-long ICC trophy drought

Rohit Sharma-led team India is all set to lock horns with Australia in the ICC WTC final at The Oval in London on Wednesday, June 7. Team India will look to end its decade-long trophy drought in an ICC event as they last clinched the ICC Champions Trophy title in 2013.

Since then, the national team has struggled to push through and attain glory in the mega ICC events across all formats. In the longest format, their most recent loss was in the ICC WTC final in 2021 against New Zealand under the leadership of Virat Kohli.

The side will be raring to come all guns blazing in its second consecutive red-ball ICC final, and aim to add its first trophy to the cabinet after nearly a decade. Billed as the Ultimate Test, the two fierce rivals will clash in a one-off decider for the coveted Test mace.

On the other hand, Australia have made their place in their maiden WTC final and will be hungry to obtain a result in their favour before turning their attention towards the highly-anticipated Ashes.
