'You will be seeing me play for a while' - Rohit Sharma brushes off retirement rumours

Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma confidently put an end to speculations about his retirement, confirming his commitment to continue playing for some more time. The 37-year-old veteran, fresh off leading the Men in Blue to T20 World Cup glory, reassured fans and critics alike that he still has much to offer to Indian cricket.

Sharma's recent retirement from T20 Internationals following India's victorious T20 World Cup 2024 campaign sparked discussions about his future in other formats. As one of India's senior players, along with Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit has been subject to increased scrutiny regarding his longevity in the sport.

However, his recent comments show that he is determined to feature in both ODIs and Test cricket. During an event in Dallas on Sunday, July 14, Rohit addressed the retirement question head-on.

 "I just said it. I don't do that far ahead. So clearly, you will be seeing me play for a while," he said. 

This declaration aligns with his previous statements on the matter, where he expressed his desire to win the World Cup and compete in the 2025 World Test Championship final.

I haven't really thought about retirement: Rohit Sharma

Sharma's commitment comes at a crucial time for Indian cricket. With the team ending their 11-year ICC trophy drought under his leadership, his experience remains an invaluable asset. The captain's focus appears to be on the present and immediate future, rather than long-term career plans.

"I haven't really thought about retirement. But, I don't know where life takes you. I am still playing well at this point in time - so I am thinking I am going to continue for a few more years and then, I don't know. I really want to win the World Cup and there is a WTC final in 2025, hopefully, India makes it," added Rohit.

While Rohit, along with other key players, is likely to be rested for the upcoming Sri Lanka tour, his role in India's cricket future remains significant. The tour, featuring three ODIs and three T20Is beginning July 27, might see potential leadership opportunities for KL Rahul in ODIs and Hardik Pandya in T20Is as per reports.
