Sophie Devine is one of the best batswomen in the world at this moment. On Thursday, the New Zealand batter produced one of the best knocks one could witness in Dunedin. She scored the fastest T20 century ever scored by a woman in cricket history. The opening batsman played an innings for the ages when she smashed a century off just 36 balls. But, the innings was made memorable by a gesture which she showed at the end of her innings.

The incident took place after she reached her hundred. She was batting on 94 when she smashed a low full toss for six towards the mid-wicket boundary. The ball went over the ropes and landed on the grass embankment. However, it landed on a small child, who was watching the match with her family.

Sophie Devine runs towards the girl who got hurt by the ball

As soon as the umpire gave a signal of the six, Devine noticed that the ball had actually hurt the child watching the match. She didn’t celebrate the century as she kept watching the child. Two balls later, when she hit two back to back fours to finish the match, she took off her helmet and started walking towards the boundary line, instead of going to her teammates and celebrating the victory. The kid was still seen in pain.

Sophie crossed the boundary line and tried to engage in a conversation with the child. It was unclear as to what she had said to the child but it was obvious that she was there to console the little girl who had got hurt. The commentators on air praised her for this gesture.

Here is the video of the incident:

The right-handed batswoman, playing against Otago in the Women’s Super Smash 2020-21, smashed her sixth T20 century since the start of 2019. This was the fastest century to be scored by a woman cricketer. During her knock of an unbeaten 108, she hit nine fours and nine sixes to seal the match for her team. Wellington was up against a formidable bowling unit but they needed only 129 runs to win. On the back of the century by Devine, her side chased down the total in just 8.4 overs, with all ten wickets intact.
