Former India captain Sourav Ganguly and Rajiv Shukla were the top names of a 7-man panel appointed as BCCI’s special committee to implement the Supreme Court recommendations in the BCCI in the best and quick way possible. TC Mathew, Naba Bhattacharjee, Jay Shah, Anirudh Chaudhry and BCCI’s acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary were the other five names.
It was decided in a long Special General Meeting (SGM) of the BCCI on Monday that a committee will be formed in order to implement the principal order of the Supreme Court dated July 18, 2016. The committee will have to give their first recommendation in a fortnight’s time. The principal issues which need to be dealt with are the 70 years age cap, cooling off period after every three years and one state one vote policy.
Interestingly, Sourav Ganguly is also a member of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) which includes Sachin Tendulkar and VSS Laxman. The imminent challenge for Ganguly is to look for a coach for Team India along with working with the special committee to induct changes as stated by the Lodha panel in the best possible manner.
State associations like Mumbai have raised concerns over the one state one vote policy as it would dilute the power of one of the strongest associations in India. People like N Srinivasan have opposed on the ruling of the age cap of 70 years.
At the moment, Supreme Court appointed Committee of Administrations (CoA) led by former CAG Vinod Rai is overseeing the day to day operations of the BCCI.
The 7-man special committee is set to start working in collaboration in the next two days. With the next court hearing on July 14, the special committee needs to deliver very soon. They will report to the COA if they face any difficulties in implementing a court ruling.
