There’s no doubt in the fact that Sourav Ganguly is one of the greatest captains India has ever had in their cricketing history. He took over at a time when match-fixing and other unwanted scandals had rattled cricket in the country. With the massive task at hand, he revived Indian cricket and made it a powerhouse. The southpaw also taught the national team the methods to win abroad.

The left-hander retired more than a decade ago, but he hasn’t dropped in intensity one bit while working as a cricket administrator. Ganguly has had a couple of stints as the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). Recently, another feather has been added to his cap. The 47-year-old veteran became the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

It was decided in an informal meeting at the Trident in Mumbai on Sunday night after Union Minister Anurag Thakur put forth his name. Former BCCI president N Srinivasan and more than 100 guests from the cricket associations graced their presence in the meeting. The formal announcement of roping in Ganguly will be done at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on October 23.

After getting the news, Ganguly has spoken about his plans to take Indian cricket forward. In the meantime, Harbhajan Singh, whose career flourished under Ganguly, wished his skipper and called him someone, who empowers others to be a leader.

He took to Twitter and wrote, “You are a leader who empower others to be a leader congratulations @SGanguly99 for becoming @BCCI president..I wish you all the best going forward..”

Dada, as Sourav is popularly known, was quick to spot the message. He asked for Harbhajan’s support in his journey as the BCCI president. Ganguly replied to Harbhajan and wrote, “Thank u bhajju …need your support in the same manner as u bowled from one end for india to win matches.”

Here is Ganguly’s reply

Back in March 2001, India ceased Australia’s 16-match winning streak in Test cricket, bagging the three-match series 2-1. Under the leadership of Ganguly, Harbhajan became the leading wicket-taker of the series. The Turbanator also picked up a hat-trick at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The spell not only helped India win after following on, but also made a name for Harbhajan at the highest level.
