Sourav Ganguly asks Kumar Sangakkara to come out of retirement in order to help the team

While the Indians are literally having a cakewalk at the island nation, the Sri Lankan team finds itself in absolute turmoil. With the loss in the 3rd One Day International, miseries seem to pile upon the team with each passing day. The fact that the team is yet to pick up a victory in the entire series completely portrays the state of Sri Lankan cricket at the moment.

Legendary Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly feels that the board needs to act immediately and find out a solution to the problem. The left handed genius suggested that the board should ask the evergreen Kumar Sangakkara to come out of retirement and don the Sri Lankan colors once again, at least for a year.

Sri Lanka had a dismal start to the year of 2017, as they were whitewashed by the Proteas in both the Test and the ODI format away from home. Though they managed to win the T20 games against South Africa and Australia, the Asian giants failed to win a home series against Bangladesh. A group stage exit in the ICC Champions Trophy followed by an ODI series loss to Zimbabwe saw skipper Angelo Mathews step down from captaincy. Then, of course, Team India came and conquered the Test series with a clean sweep and the ODI series seems to be heading in the same direction.

After the defeat in the first ODI, the Sri Lankan fans expressed their frustration by gathering in front of the SLC office and hurling abuses at the management. They also surrounded the team bus and shouted at the top of their voices even before the players could board it. We witnessed another outrage from the fans when they interrupted the 3rd ODI by throwing bottles on the ground.

However, Sri Lanka must win the remaining two One Day Internationals to ensure automatic qualification for the World Cup in 2019. Keeping in mind the drastic fall in the form of the team and the poor display by the batting line up Sourav Ganguly feels it’s time for Kumar Sangakkara to step up for the nation. Sangakkara is in dazzling form even after retirement as he scored a mammoth 1086 runs in seven matches in this year’s county season in England. The elegant stroke player smashed 6 centuries and 2 fifties in the process. He is also playing a part in the Caribbean Premier League with 215 runs from 8 matches with a number of half centuries to his name.

Hindi news outlet Aaj Tak’s journalist Vikrant Gupta took to Twitter to reveal Ganguly’s suggestion for Sri Lanka cricket.
