Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly recently launched his book titled ‘A century is not enough’. At the book launch event, Ganguly answered several questions of the media. The media fired in all cricket related questions including the recent ‘sandpaper gate’. Team Australia were found guilty of ball tampering during the Cape Town Test against Australia.
Following the incident, three cricketers, David Warner, Steve Smith, and Cameron Bancroft, were handed bans by the Cricket Australia. Many believed that the imposition was too severe on these three cricketers. Also, the fans and the critics had soft corner for Steve Smith, who many believed was a scapegoat in the entire fiasco. Sourav Ganguly was also seen supporting the cause of the three cricketers when asked to comment on the issue.
‘I just wish them luck’
He remarked that he totally sympathises with Steve Smith. Ganguly hoped that Smith will come back stronger and continue to play in the way he is renowned for performing. He added that in his opinion, Smith did not cheat. Ganguly refrained from using the word cheating in this particular context. Furthermore, He wished the ‘disgrace trio’ good luck. He hopes to see the three players get back on the cricket field and perform for their side again. Ganguly reiterated that is is not right to call it cheating.
“I sympathise with Steve Smith. He is a fantastic player and hopefully he will come back and keep scoring runs for Australia, because I don’t think it’s cheating, actually I don’t believe it is cheating. I just wish them (Smith, Warner and Bancroft) luck and hopefully they come back and play well. It’s not right to call it cheating,” Sourav Ganguly quoted.
At the book launch event, Sourav Ganguly was joined by his former teammate Sachin Tendulkar. Both former Indian captains are known for their great camaraderie. Ganguly spoke about various cricket memories during the event including the iconic NatWest series final of 2002. Also, Rohit Sharma was seen attending the event.
