Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly heaped praises on current Indian captain Virat Kohli after the latter’s unfeigned tribute to Mahendra Singh Dhoni following his decision to step down from India’s limited over captaincy. Despite being arguably the best batsman of the modern generation, Kohli didn’t forget to thank Dhoni for playing a very big role in shaping his career and also acknowledged the fact that Dhoni was the one who safeguarded his place in the side when he was struggling for form. His outpoured emotion towards Dhoni shows the character he is.

With just over a week to go for the India-England limited overs series to commence, Dhoni took everyone by surprise by deciding to step down from India’s limited overs captaincy with immediate effect. Despite stepping down he will be available for selection solely as a keeper batsman.

Ganguly who is undoubtedly one of the greatest ever Indian captains was pretty impressed with Kohli’s words and praised him for not forgetting the person who played such a big role in shaping his international career. He took to his twitter handle to applaud Kohli for his gesture and congratulate Dhoni on for his achievement as an Indian skipper.

Despite Team India being in a scintillating form off late especially in the longest format of the game, it will be all new experience for Kohli to lead his side in limited overs cricket. He will be very lucky to have Dhoni still with him on the team and can use his brain to good effect.

Kohli had mentioned earlier that he would like Dhoni to bat up the order from now and wants him to play freely. “It’s a win-win situation for the new captain coming in, still having that guy for advice, for his inputs, for the cricketing brain purely that he has. But what I’m really, really happy about and what I’m most pleased about is the fact that he’ll be able to play free cricket, he’ll be able to express himself as the aggressive MS Dhoni that we knew when he came into the team,” Kohli had said.
