Sourav Ganguly, Diego Maradona to face off in charity football match in Kolkata

The legendary former football player, Diego Maradona, is all set to make a visit to India this September. The former Argentina wizard will be visiting the city of Kolkata this year ahead of the FIFA U-17 World Cup. India will be hosting the mega event. The World Cup is expected to be a landmark event in the history of the Indian football. It will kick off in October this year.

It is a known fact that the sport of football is a very popular one in India, albeit the national side is nowhere close to the top ranked teams in the world. Things are only bound to improve with each passing day in Indian football. The Argentine footballer will also play a charity football match in the city of Kolkata against former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly.

Ganguly is the most revered cricketer to have emerged from the state of West Bengal. He is renowned as one of the most successful Indian captain. As per the reports in Scroll.in, Diego Maradona and Sourav Ganguly will participate in the charity football match in opposition teams.

Love for the city

This is not the first time that Maradona will be coming to India. He had last visited the city of Kolkata in 2008 and had received a rousing welcome from the fans. He is set to receive a Lifetime Achievement award in West Bengal. He posted a message on his social media handle about his India trip.

“It is such an honour for me to be able to make this trip. Kolkata is a very special place and I have good memories from my trip there many years ago, the fans were fantastic. #India is a very passionate football nation, and I look forward to meeting a whole new generation of fans while continuing to spread the overwhelming love that I have for this beautiful game,” Diego Maradona had posted on his social media handle.
